How to Make a Doll

First we start with the soft-fired greenware of a reproduction mold which is poured in the slip color of your choice.

The greenware is “wet” cleaned using an assortment of brushes, sanders, sizers and other tools.

The cleaned greenware is then fired at a very high temperature.  This firing changes the overall composition of the piece from the greenware state to what is known as bisque/porcelain.

The hard fired porcelain is now polished to achieve a fine smoothness to be ready for painting. Once this polishing is completed you are ready to paint the details of your doll (eyelashes, eyebrows, cheeks, and lips).  Your paint is then fired again. This is called China Firing, and may be done 2-3 times before painting is completed.  You are finished painting your doll when you have achieved your desired look by adding highlights and overall washes.

Now you are ready for the assembly of your doll. This includes inserting the eyes, and eyelashes, attaching the pate and selected wig, stringing your doll and or attaching the head and shoulderplate to a cloth body that is sewn and stuffed.

Et Voila, you have just completed your first doll, and it took you only 6 classes (more or less).  It was easier than you thought and you can’t wait to make your next
2 or 3!!!!!!!.
